Almost all Judges in England and Wales believe that their working conditions have worsened over the past 5 years, the first official survey of Judicial Attitudes has revealed.
Judges who have been in the post more than 5 years, 86% said that conditions had deteriorated. Apparently salaries and pensions are a source of discontent with 75% of respondents saying that they had suffered a loss in net earnings over the past 5 years. Almost half of District, Circuit and Employment Judges said that they would pursue earning additional income through out of Court work if this option existed.
A third of Judges said that they would consider leaving the Judiciary early in the next 5 years.
Whilst for most readers this information will be met with some incredulity, we suppose that if the Country wants good, independent and incorruptible Judges, we probably need to keep them happy!
