Dairy company fined £200,000 following conviction for health and safety breach

Posted by Mark Carlisle on August 2nd 2018 in AGRICULTURAL AND RURAL AFFAIRS , All .

On 11 July 2018, Tomlinson's Dairies Limited was fined £200,000 and ordered to pay costs of £4,267.20 to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) after pleading guilty to breaching section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 at Wrexham Magistrates' Court.

On 3 May 2017, an employee of Tomlinson's Dairies Limited was modifying pipework when he was covered in hot caustic and steam, resulting in serious injuries.

An investigation by the HSE found that Tomlinson's Dairies Limited had failed to ensure the safe isolation of plant and pipework before work began. Tomlinson's Dairies Limited had relied on informal risk control systems and arrangements that were no longer sufficient for a business of its magnitude.
