Poultry (including game birds): registration rules
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has published guidance for poultry including game) owners. Those farmers or landowners who keep 50 or more birds on their premises must register using the compulsory registration form within one month of keeping. The law applies if landowners keep:
50 or more birds captive for any period of time.
Flocks made up of different species, such as chickens, ducks or geese.
Birds for the consumption of meat and eggs, other commercial purposes, restocking game birds or breeding for these three purposes.
Owners of fewer than 50 birds, or birds kept as pets, may choose to register, however the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) encourages voluntary registration.
